Our writer, Pull Tab King, not too long ago wrote an article breaking down the moves of one Bill Smith. It was pretty clear that the only conclusion one can make of Smith is that he was a downgrade from the moves of Terry Ryan.
Thus, the news today came to no surprise at the worldwide headquarters of TossingDeuces.com. We long believed Smith had to go, and eventually, the Twins seemed to have agreed. Today, the Twins announced that “Terry Ryan named interim GM“. The Twins went on to say that not only will Terry Ryan be the acting GM, but that he will also help hire the next Twins GM.
Let’s take a good look at the career of Terry Ryan. Terry was a local kid out of Janesville, Wisconsin, and was drafted by the Twins in 35th round of the 1972 draft. He was a pitcher, and played in Wisconsin Rapids for the Twins. He went 10-0 on the mound in 1973, with a 1.70 ERA. Wisconsin Rapids no longer has a Twins affiliation, and instead is back in the Northwoods League as the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. But I digress.
Too many injuries in AA left Ryan cut from the Twins. Some guys were made for a life in the game of baseball, and Ryan was clearly one of those. After 6 years of scouting for the New York Mets, Ryan was hired as the Twins scouting director under the leadership of Andy MacPhail. MacPhail would leave for the Cubs in 1994, and Ryan would take over as the Twins General Manager.
People talk alot about MoneyBall, but Terry Ryan Ball was also its own kind. Terry believed in constant, continual scouting of every player in Major League Baseball. After some early bumps in the road, Ryan got on a roll. He wasn’t afraid to make moves. We take a look at the top 5 Terry Ryan Moves.
- February 16, 1998: Traded second baseman Chuck Knoblauch to the New York Yankees in exchange for outfielder Brian Buchanan, shortstop Cristian Guzman, pitcher Eric Milton, pitcher Danny Mota, and cash.
- November 14, 2003: Traded catcher A.J. Pierzynski and cash to the San Francisco Giants. Received pitchers Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano, and Boof Bonser.
- December 13, 1999: Under the Rule 5 Draft, the Twins sent minor leaguer Jared Camp and cash to the Florida Marlins in exchange for future Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana.
As its clear, we’re glad Terry Ryan is back. We hope to convince him to stay for another decade! Welcome back Terry Ryan! We need you, gotta have you, can’t do it without you!
